Despite the great contributions of the Roman Empire and the Renaissance, Central Italians idealize the Victorian age. The 1800s were characterized by great industry and lavish lifestyles mostly unmarred by wars and plagues - their "Hay Day."

World War II was particularly tough on Central Italy with thousands of casualties, many innocents, and countless architectural treasures destroyed.

Umbertide and Gubbio were occupied by Nazis during the war, among other towns, and Umbertide was partially destroyed by a bomb intended for the train station on April 25, 1944.

Most of Europe was devastated by World War II and Central Italy was no exception.
